Joining rubber components is a challenging task due to the adhesive properties of this material. There are two types of rubber available on the market: natural rubber and synthetic rubber (e.g. EPDM, SBR, NBR, nitrile, butyl, silicone). Rubber is used in many industries, including construction (e.g. roofing materials, insulation), medical field (e.g. syringes, medical gloves), transportation (e.g. car mats), everyday products (e.g. rainwear, storage containers).

There are many different types of adhesives for rubber (silicone adhesive (commonly used for bonding silicone rubber and other materials), cyanoacrylate adhesives, neoprene adhesive (used for bonding with concrete, for example), polyurethane adhesives, epoxy adhesives (used for bonding rubber with other substrates such as metal or glass), contact adhesives, natural rubber-based rubber adhesive, structural acrylic adhesives (used when a longer curing time is needed), etc.).

Solvent-based adhesives and polyurethane adhesives are used for bonding large surfaces and elements. For bonding small rubber elements, fast-curing adhesives (cyanoacrylates) are used.

Before applying the appropriate adhesive to bond rubber, remove all foreign contaminants (e.g. grease, dirt) before application. Contaminants such as grease or slip additives can prevent the formation of a strong adhesive bond.

What to use to glue rubber? - Suggestions

There are many types of adhesives available on the market that differ in their applications:

Adhesive for rubber and metal - for bonding metal and wood, it is recommended to use an elastic adhesive. Polyurethane-based adhesives work well for this type of application. Elastic polyurethane adhesives for rubber are two-component adhesives that allow for manipulation of the bond thickness (by applying multiple layers of adhesive).

Adhesive for rubber and wood - for bonding rubber and wood, two-component cyanoacrylate adhesives are commonly used, which do not require pre-treatment of the substrate before application.

Adhesive for rubber and plastic - for bonding plastics (e.g. polypropylene, Teflon, polyethylene) with rubber, cyanoacrylate adhesives are suitable. This one-component preparation has a short bonding time. Epoxy adhesives can also be used for this purpose (check our offer).

Adhesive for fabric and rubber - for such applications, non-absorbent adhesives (e.g. shoe adhesives) should be sought. Silicone rubber adhesive or epoxy adhesives are not suitable for this type of application.

What is a good adhesive for rubber and rubber-like materials?

Cyanoacrylate adhesive commonly known as "super glue." It is the best adhesive for bonding rubber with other materials, quickly creating a strong bond between substrates. It is dedicated to plastics, rubber, elastomeric materials. It is a strong adhesive, perfect for O-rings and applications requiring quick bonding. After applying the adhesive, the bonded parts should be quickly pressed together. Moisture is required for the curing process to start.

Cyanoacrylates form fast, reliable bonds, making them widely used in various industries. Typical applications include medical devices, automotive components, furniture parts, airplane components, among others.

To bond rubber and plastics, adhesives based on acrylic resin, with cyanoacrylate as the main component, are perfect. Cyanoacrylate adhesive requires moisture to initiate the hardening process.
