Aflas® O-Rings
Aflas® O-rings are high-performance sealing solutions made from a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE, FEPM) and propylene, containing approximately 54% fluorine. Also referred to as TFE/P rubber, Aflas® seals are engineered to prevent fluid and gas leaks, ensuring long-term performance, durability, and chemical resistance in harsh industrial environments.
Key Advantages and Properties of Aflas® O-Rings
Aflas® O-rings are engineered elastomeric compounds designed to withstand extreme operating conditions. Thanks to their advanced polymer structure, they perform exceptionally in environments involving high pressures, aggressive chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
Chemical Resistance
TFE/P rubber O-rings offer outstanding resistance to chemical degradation caused by harsh industrial substances. The unique combination of fluorinated and hydrocarbon segments in the polymer chain allows them to withstand exposure to a wide range of chemicals. These include:
-
Brake fluids
-
Crude oil
-
Synthetic and vegetable oils
-
Transmission fluids
-
Acids and alkalis
This broad compatibility makes Aflas® a preferred choice for sealing components in chemically aggressive applications.
High Temperature Tolerance
One of the standout features of Aflas® O-rings is their excellent thermal resistance. They operate reliably in a wide temperature range from –25°C to +230°C. The presence of fluorine atoms in the polymer structure enhances their ability to withstand heat, making them ideal for high-temperature sealing applications across many sectors.
Aging and Oxidation Resistance
Aflas® O-rings are inherently resistant to oxidative degradation, allowing them to maintain sealing integrity and mechanical properties over long-term use. This resistance to aging translates into extended product life and reduced maintenance.
Electrical Insulation
These O-rings also provide excellent electrical insulation, making them suitable for sealing applications in environments where resistance to electrical current is crucial.
Steam and Amine Resistance
TFE/P rubber demonstrates resistance to amine-based corrosion inhibitors and steam corrosion, allowing it to be used effectively in high-pressure steam systems and refinery processes involving hot steam exposure.
In addition, Aflas® seals are:
-
Resistant to ozone and UV exposure
-
Compatible with vacuum applications
-
Gas impermeable and pressure-retentive
-
Low in compression set
Common Applications of Aflas® O-Rings
Thanks to their chemical, thermal, and steam resistance, Aflas® O-rings are widely used in high-demand industrial environments. Their excellent sealing performance makes them suitable for:
-
Chemical processing – pump seals, agitators, valves
-
Automotive industry – fuel injector seals, turbocharger hoses
-
Oil and gas industry – drilling tools, valves, high-pressure systems
-
Power generation – steam and hot water installations
-
Pharmaceutical industry – fluid transfer and CIP systems
-
Mining and drilling – high-stress environmental applications
-
Food processing – aggressive cleaning and steam contact environments
