What is the BAM Certificate?
BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung) is the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, located in Berlin. Through innovative research and precise testing, BAM is responsible for evaluating materials—especially those used in hazardous environments, such as in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and rubber industries.
Oxygen Approval
All materials react to oxygen when exposed to certain pressures and temperatures. In industrial processes, oxygen presents a significant risk. While oxygen itself is not flammable, it accelerates combustion. The higher the oxygen concentration, the greater the fire hazard and the lower the ignition temperature. In its purest form, oxygen can cause spontaneous ignition of most materials.
To minimise this danger, BAM has introduced a certification programme for rubber products used in the chemical industry. It assesses the reactivity of sealing materials when exposed to oxygen under high pressure and elevated temperature. The certificate confirms that rubber components are safe, reliable, and meet the strict standards of the industry. Products are considered resistant if no changes in appearance, weight, or autoignition temperature are observed. The high safety standards defined by BAM serve as a global benchmark.
