Horse Stall Box – design, safety, comfort
In equestrian communities, there's ongoing debate about the best horse stall design, bedding choice, and hay feeding methods. However, three priorities are undeniable: functionality, safety, and the horse’s comfort.
Stall dimensions
Minimum stall size is 3 × 3 m per adult horse, 3 × 4 m for mare with foal. Bigger boxes are recommended whenever possible. Solid walls (wood or concrete) are safer than low-height panels to prevent hoof entrapment. Roof should be twice the horse’s height at the withers.
Lighting and ventilation
Provide natural light and fresh air; artificial lighting can supplement. Use high windows or skylights above horses' heads for safety. Install a covered outdoor area for shelter in bad weather.
Essential stall equipment
-
Feeding trough or haynet
-
Waterer
-
Hay rack or hay bag
-
Rubber stall mats
Ensure waterers and troughs are wall-mounted to avoid clutter.
Entrance and security
Entry doors should be wide, fully operable, and free of obstructions. Add a low-level lock to prevent clever horses from opening the gate.
Bedding options
Straw is cheapest but dusty and can cause digestive issues. Alternatives like wood shavings, peat, or pellets may cost more initially but offer better hygiene and overall economy.
Rubber mats in the stall
Rubber stall mats offer thermal insulation, shock absorption, non-slip surfaces, and easy drainage. They reduce veterinary needs and increase comfort. Durable and simple to clean, they protect horses on cold concrete floors.
Dividing walls
Choose partition styles based on horse personalities: solid walls, half-grills, full grills, all galvanised for ventilation and structure. Combine with reusable fronts to create functional and hospitable stalls.
Facades and fronts
Quality stalls use wood or powder-coated/galvanized steel, integrated ventilation, easy assembly, and customizable fronts. Sliding barn doors and decorative features can personalize your stable’s appearance.
