Therefore, when designing a horse stall it is worth paying particular attention to its dimensions, equipment, flooring and solutions that ensure the animal's safety.

Stall for a horse – dimensions

The minimum dimensions of a stall for one adult riding horse are 3×3 m. For a mare with a foal these values increase to 3×4 m. However, it is worth considering increasing the size of our horse's sleeping area if possible. The stall walls should be made of wood, concrete or another solid material. The use of bars or mesh below 1.5 m in height could create a risk of a limb becoming trapped between the bars. The stall roof should be at a height twice the horse's height at the withers.

Lighting and sunlight in the stall

During the day horses should have access to natural light and fresh air. Artificial lighting can be used as additional equipment. The interior of the stable should receive the maximum possible amount of daylight. You can opt for skylights in the roof or a separate window for each stall. However, keep in mind that the glass should be placed high, out of reach of the horses' hooves; otherwise dangerous situations can easily occur.

In case of bad weather it is worth building a shelter under which the horse can take cover. Stud owners want to create comfortable and safe conditions for their horse. Basic elements of equipment

The basic equipment of a horse stall should be arranged so as to provide the animal with easy access to water and feed and to reduce the risk of injury.

Each stall must obligatorily include the following:

• Manger

• Waterer

• Hay rack

While the hay rack can simply be a net hung from the ceiling, which will give the horse additional entertainment while eating, the waterer and manger should be located as close to the edge as possible to minimize the risk that the horse will catch on them.

What to pay attention to when building a horse stall?

Location of the entrance

One of the most important elements when building a horse stall is a properly designed entrance. Regardless of the type of door used (e.g. wooden sliding doors with decorative fronts or without), they should be wide, unobstructed, and able to open fully. There should also be no protruding or sharp elements near the entrance to the stall that a person or a horse could catch on.

Best place for the latch?

Horses are very intelligent animals that learn quickly, so it often happens that they can open the latch on a door by themselves. To prevent uncontrolled escapes, it is worth installing an additional security device near the floor that the horse cannot reach. The closure used should be solid, easy for a person to operate and difficult for a horse to open.

Bedding

This is another important aspect worth discussing. The most popular and regarded as the cheapest solution is straw, however many horses like to eat it, which in large quantities can cause digestive problems. In addition, straw is very dusty, requires storage and is very often a habitat for harmful fungi and bacteria. For these reasons it is worth considering seemingly more expensive solutions such as wood shavings, peat or pellet. In the final account such a solution may turn out to be comparable in price, and much more economical and convenient.

Flooring in a horse stall

A properly chosen flooring in a horse stall should provide stability, reduce the animal's contact with cold and hard flooring and make cleaning easier.
