WRAS Certificate

16.08.2023

The WRAS Certificate (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) is a recognised mark of compliance proving that products meet the legal requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of plumbing systems and water fittings that connect to the public water supply in the UK.

Established in 1999, these regulations ensure that residents in the United Kingdom have access to safe drinking water by setting legal standards for plumbing, water fittings, and water-using appliances. The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is responsible for approving products and materials used in water systems to prevent contamination, waste, and inaccurate measurement.

Certification and Product Compliance

Installing products that comply with strict regulations is essential for protecting public health. It guarantees that drinking water remains free from pollutants and ensures efficient usage and accurate metering. WRAS approval applies to both full products (such as showers, valves, and boilers) and non-metallic components (such as gaskets and rubber washers) that undergo mechanical and quality testing.

These elements are tested for their interaction with hot and cold water to assess any potential contamination. Some materials may release metals or substances that affect water taste, smell, clarity, or encourage bacterial growth. If a product passes these tests without negatively affecting water quality, it receives the WRAS approval mark.

WRAS Approval for Drinking Water

WRAS approval is granted after a product has been positively assessed for compliance with high standards and regulations set out in UK water supply laws. Products must pass strict mechanical and water quality tests to gain certification. Since 1999, WRAS approval has been a trusted indicator of product safety.

This certificate confirms that the manufacturer’s products are of high quality and do not contaminate drinking water or pose a risk to public health. It also facilitates the process of acquiring the Polish PZH certificate, which complies with Article 10 of EU Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of drinking water.

WRAS also offers a product approval system allowing manufacturers to demonstrate that their fittings—such as taps, boilers, and pipes—meet current standards.

WRAS Certification and Testing

WRAS certificates are issued following a series of tests performed by independent laboratories. Products that come into contact with drinking water must be retested every 5 years to maintain high safety and performance standards.

Certified products, having passed these independent tests, are listed on the official WRAS website with a unique approval number. These certified items ensure protection against water contamination and confirm that the materials are suitable for contact with drinking water, without contributing to waste or inefficiency.
