EN 10204 Standard
EN 10204 defines the types of inspection documents in which a manufacturer certifies that the delivered materials comply with the requirements specified in the customer’s order. It covers various types of material certificates.
Inspection documents serve as proof of compliance with the order's specifications or confirm the origin of the material for the delivery of all metal products, regardless of the manufacturing method (bars, sheets, castings, plates). The standard can also apply to non-metallic products. These documents must be signed by a person authorized to confirm their validity.
EN 10204 – Types of Inspection Documents
This European standard outlines the types of inspection certificates provided to the purchaser and classifies them into four types, grouped into two main categories depending on the testing performed:
Non-specific inspection
This is carried out by the manufacturer according to internal quality control to confirm that the product complies with the order, without including specific test results. This applies to certificates 2.1 and 2.2.
Specific inspection
This involves predefined testing by the manufacturer, including dimensional checks, chemical composition analysis, functional tests (e.g., tensile strength), and mechanical property evaluations. These tests ensure that the product meets the order requirements and product specifications. The scope depends on the type of item and applicable standards, and must be specified in the order. This applies to certificates 3.1 and 3.2.
Originals and Copies
According to EN 10204, intermediaries must only pass on original documents or copies received from the manufacturer, without altering the content.
Copying original documents is allowed under two conditions: traceability procedures are followed, and the required inspection documents are made available upon request.
EN 10204 Certification Explained
Certificate of Compliance 2.1
A document in which the manufacturer declares that the product complies with the customer's order. No specific test results are included.
Certificate 2.2
According to EN 10204, this certificate confirms compliance with the order but does not include results of specific testing on the delivered product. It may include internal quality data. Internal testing is conducted according to the manufacturer's own procedures to verify conformity with the product specification.
Inspection Certificate 3.1
Under EN 10204, the 3.1 certificate includes test results from specific inspections. It confirms that the product meets both the customer's order and the applicable technical specifications. Additional test requirements must be defined in the order. This document can only be issued by the manufacturer and signed by their authorized inspection representative.
Inspection Certificate 3.2
This type confirms compliance with the customer’s requirements and includes results from inspections carried out by an independent third party – either a customer representative or an inspector from a relevant certification authority.
