What are ergonomic mats? How did they come about and what properties do they have?

The History of Ergonomic Mats begins with Ergonomics, the science of work, which emerged as early as the 19th century. Its primary task is to determine working conditions that correspond to the psychophysical capabilities of humans. It is important not only to achieve the best possible results, but above all to preserve workers' comfort and protect them from incurring high biological costs and from developing occupational diseases.

What are ergonomic mats?

Ergonomic mats, also called anti-fatigue mats, are one of the solutions used to improve work comfort. They are used primarily at workstations where an employee performs their work standing or kneeling for a long time.

Prolonged work in one position can cause muscle tension, fatigue and discomfort. A properly selected ergonomic mat provides an additional layer between the worker and the hard surface.

Ergonomic mats support the organization of an ergonomic workstation, especially where prolonged standing work and the associated static load occur. A properly selected mat can reduce fatigue and discomfort resulting from maintaining one body position for a long time and help protect the musculoskeletal system.

Where do we use ergonomic mats?

Ergonomic mats (anti-fatigue mats) aim to eliminate fatigue resulting from working in an unchanging body position. This mainly concerns the standing position, but also other positions, e.g. kneeling. Muscle fatigue is caused primarily by impaired blood circulation resulting from maintaining a tense position. In work conditions it is difficult to ensure regular muscle relaxation because there is often no time for it. In this case, ergonomic mats are ideal, whose surface allows the lower limbs to unconsciously alternate between tension and relaxation. This helps reduce leg and back pain. It lowers the feeling of fatigue while increasing workers' efficiency.

Anti-fatigue mats are used in many workplaces. They are used, among others, at production lines, in factories, workshops, bars, food processing plants and kitchens. They can also be used as knee mats and in offices. They work especially well where prolonged standing or kneeling work occurs.

Advantages of using ergonomic mats

Rubber floor mats offer many advantages in terms of safety and comfort. Here are the benefits of using them:

High durability and robustness

At Power Rubber we offer top quality workstation mats that are characterized by high durability, low abrasion, and greater resistance to oils, greases and chemical substances. For example, a covering made of nitrile rubber is characterized by greater resistance to high temperature. The mats are known for their waterproof properties, which additionally protect the floor from freezing and thawing.

Floor protection

An industrial rubber mat protects the floor from chipping and scratching. The use of mats is essential in some conditions, especially those exposed to falling objects that could permanently damage the floor. Importantly, chips and holes in the floor can cause accidental trips and falls of workers.

Protection of equipment and fittings

Dropping objects from a height onto a bare, hard, concrete surface can permanently damage them and at the same time chip or crack the floor. Industrial mats absorb the impact energy of most falling objects. This is especially important for delicate equipment.

Reduces noise and vibration

Wondering why our ergonomic covering is often used in industry and production? Here is the answer! Thanks to our anti-fatigue mat, noise is muffled and vibrations are reduced. This solution significantly raises work comfort and improves overall worker efficiency, contributing to the creation of a more friendly workplace.

Cushioning

Most surfaces in industrial plants are made of concrete. Industrial mats, thanks to their cushioning properties, absorb shocks and impacts of the worker's feet against the hard floor.

Prevention of accidents

Most mats have anti-slip properties. They provide footwear with adequate grip, minimizing the risk of slipping or falling. They are used in potentially dangerous places, especially in wet, damp, oily and slippery areas.

Why use anti-fatigue mats?

Ergonomic mats are also called anti-fatigue mats. They aim to reduce and eliminate fatigue caused by standing or kneeling work. Prolonged standing reduces work efficiency due to muscle fatigue caused primarily by impaired blood circulation and the prolonged maintenance of a tense position.

People performing tasks at a given workstation find it difficult to take care of regular muscle relaxation. Standing on hard surfaces for a long time reduces blood flow, disrupts circulation in the feet and legs, and contributes to hip and lower back pain.

Our rubber covering with an ergonomic surface profile has been designed to provide better employee well-being and increase their efficiency by reducing fatigue and discomfort at the workplace when standing or kneeling.

This solution elicits a positive reaction from the whole body, contributing to increased productivity and improved worker performance.

Anti-fatigue mats bring many benefits. When choosing them, one should be guided by functional needs as well as the price and high quality of the mat.

Anti-fatigue mats with ergonomic properties have been designed with the safety and comfort of people working for long periods in an unchanging position in mind, in places such as, for example: food processing plants, production lines, medical centers, shops, bars.

Anti-fatigue mat - how does it affect worker comfort and efficiency?

Concrete floors do not provide cushioning, causing many health ailments (lower limb disorders, varicose veins, joint and spine compression). Our mats have excellent anti-fatigue properties. They absorb shock waves caused by walking, stimulating blood flow in the legs and reducing the risk of workplace injuries. Placing mats in the work environment allows employees to perform their assigned tasks for longer. Installing a rubber floor has many advantages, here they are:

  • protection of workers from injuries

  • prevents slips, trips and falls

  • provides insulation from cold floors

  • increases productivity (better concentration and performance)

Industrial mats for many applications

How to choose an ergonomic mat for the workstation?

When choosing an ergonomic mat, one should be guided by both functional needs and the high quality of the product. In the case of workstations where moisture, oils or chemicals occur, anti-slip properties, resistance and the ability to drain liquids are important. It is also important to match the mat to the type of work performed and the conditions at the workstation. At stations where protection against electrostatic charges is required, mats with ESD properties should be used.

Anti-fatigue mats from Power Rubber

The company POWER RUBBER offers a wide range of anti-fatigue mats that you can use in various places. These include, among others: production lines in factories, workshops, bars, food processing plants and kitchens.

For our Clients we have also prepared knee mats and mats for use in offices. Stimulating blood circulation in the muscles and relieving the spine are not the only advantages of our mats, which also feature the following parameters:

  • Excellent grip,
  • Low risk of slipping,
  • Freedom of movement,
  • Low risk of tripping (thanks to chamfered edges),
  • Thermal insulation from cold floors,
  • Compliance with occupational health and safety standards in places where ergonomic work is required
