EPDM gasket thanks to its properties has a wide range of applications. This synthetic rubber is an exceptionally durable material resistant to weather conditions, direct sunlight, water, various categories of chemicals. Check what EPDM rubber seals (including self-adhesive seals) are, what properties they have, and where they can be used.

What is EPDM?

EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) is a rubber with a wide range of applications. Products made from this material exhibit resistance to weather conditions, sunlight, and oxygen. This type of rubber is resistant to aging, the action of many diluted acids and bases, as well as water. It is an odorless material, its color does not change, and it is heat resistant. EPDM rubber differs in the content of ethylene and the dienes used (also the price of products varies). This diversity can affect the physical properties of products created from EPDM. Additionally, the material provides high tensile strength (resistance to cracking under high tension) and elasticity (ability to return to its original state after compression or extension). Products made from EPDM usually have a hardness of 40 to 90 ShA (Shore A scale).

EPDM Seals

EPDM rubber seals compared to silicone rubber are more resistant to wear, cutting, and tearing. EPDM rubber also exhibits better tensile strength than silicone rubber. It is used, among others, in the automotive industry or as seals for windows and doors, while silicone finds applications in the aerospace or food industry. Moreover, EPDM micro rubber, besides excellent resistance to weather conditions and aging, has excellent cushioning, damping, and protective properties. It can be used as an insulating material.

Self-Adhesive EPDM Seal

Self-adhesive EPDM seals (with adhesive tape) are available on the market. Self-adhesive micro rubber EPDM is easy to install - just peel off the adhesive bottom in one motion. When using self-adhesive seals, remember that the surface to which you apply them should be clean, dry, and free from dust and grease. You can use a degreasing agent to wipe the surface. The EPDM self-adhesive seal for windows uses EPDM as the only material classified in the group of technical rubbers. The self-adhesive seal has many applications. It is perfect for sealing various spaces and gaps. Its price depends on the purpose and size. It can be cut to the preferred size by the customer (the price per running meter requires a minimum purchase of 1 meter) and used for sealing mobile elements (doors, flaps) as well as gaskets, which will eliminate protruding elements of machines and devices.

Properties of seals made of EPDM rubber:

  • EPDM seals show excellent tolerance for low temperatures down to -45°C
  • They perform effectively at temperatures up to +145°C
  • Very good insulator (electrical insulation, sound insulation from device noise, etc.)
  • High chemical resistance (hot water and steam, silicone greases, oils, sodium hydroxide solutions, many diluted acids and chemicals)
  • EPDM seal is resistant to aging
  • Very effective in sealing against water, wind, mud, dust
  • Resistance to weather conditions
  • Resistance to cracking and elasticity
  • Provides reliable, long-lasting sealing (even in demanding weather conditions)
  • Rubber color does not change (does not discolor the surface)

This synthetic elastomer is not resistant to some categories of chemicals (gasoline, engine oil, synthetic ester oils).

Application of EPDM seals

The EPDM rubber seal is characterized by very good thermal and mechanical properties. Due to high tensile strength and elasticity, it is perfect for vibration isolating mounts during machine operation. The self-adhesive seal has the same properties as the non-adhesive seal. Seals made of synthetic rubber used in production ensure high durability of products.

Check where EPDM seals will find applications, here are some of them:

  • door seals (including self-adhesive ones)
  • window seals (including self-adhesive PVC window seals)
  • refrigerator and freezer seals
  • automotive industry
  • construction industry (collars for skylights)
  • electrical seals
  • waterproofing
  • protection of sharp edges and corners
