Although rubber products are mostly associated with industrial and automotive uses, there are also rubber products designed for places where animals are kept. Horses and cattle are often transported for various reasons, so to ensure the animal's comfort, mats are frequently installed in specially designed vehicles. These mats help prevent slipping and chilling of the animal during transport.

Horse Transport Mats – Types

There is a wide variety of mats available on the market for use in horse transport vehicles. They differ not only by the manufacturer and country of production but also by texture, dimensions, and, of course, price. In Poland, the most standard mat can be found, made to size, with a thickness between 6 and 10 mm, a width of 120 cm, and a length of 180 cm. This mat is made from non-absorbent vulcanized rubber, with a pebble-textured upper surface and a smooth underside. The price of this mat ranges from 120 to 200 PLN per square meter, depending on the chosen thickness. Next, there is the trap mat, which has special 10 mm or 20 mm high studs made from ribbed vulcanized rubber with a smooth bottom. Its price is around 240 PLN per square meter. There are also mats made from vulcanized rubber with a rough texture on both the top and bottom. These mats cost between 110 PLN and 130 PLN, depending on thickness. Lastly, there are mats made from non-absorbent vulcanized rubber with a ribbed top surface similar to a trap mat and a smooth underside with fabric. These mats are priced around 220 PLN per square meter. The most common color for horse transport mats is black.

Rubber for Horse Transport – Properties

The rubber used in horse transport mats must be safe for the animal. It must also provide comfort and ease during the ride to avoid unnecessary stress. The good rubber properties are primarily thermal insulation to prevent the animal from getting cold. The rubber is made from a material that, when used to line a horse transport vehicle, ensures the animal's insulation from the cold floor. The thickness of the rubber also affects this property. For added comfort, manufacturers strive to produce products that are specially shaped to fit the horse's hooves and potential hoof pads. Rubber mats are also placed at the entrance of the trailer to ensure safe loading of the animal. Trap-type rubbers are most commonly used, typically reinforced with non-woven fabric and abrasion-resistant.

A good mat should be characterized by easy drainage of water and other fluids, preventing the animal from slipping and falling, while also being highly resistant to wear. Animals such as horses exert significant pressure on the mat due to their weight, so the mat should be anti-fatigue. Additionally, good rubber is not only economical but also easy to install, clean, and maintain. For the animal, a significant factor will be the mat's grip on the ground, especially when rising, which is influenced by anti-slip properties. Furthermore, good thermal insulation is crucial for safe transport, minimizing the animal’s stress, which could negatively impact the carrier.
