DIN 53509 Standard
Ozone Test Chambers for Rubber Materials
The DIN 53509 standard was developed by the German Institute for Standardisation. It defines test methods for evaluating the resistance of rubber products to cracking caused by ozone under static load.
Tests are conducted in sealed, light-proof ozone chambers built according to DIN 53509. These chambers simulate artificial ozone-rich environments to assess elastomer ageing. The test determines if the rubber sample is durable and ozone-resistant.
DIN ISO 1431-1 – The Updated Standard
Over time, DIN 53509 ozone chambers were replaced by those compliant with DIN ISO 1431-1.
This updated standard outlines test procedures to measure ozone resistance in vulcanised or thermoplastic rubber under static and dynamic tensile stress, at specific temperatures, in ozone-containing atmospheres, excluding direct light exposure.
