O-ring and flat gasket.

O-ring and flat gasket are essential sealing elements that prevent liquids or gases from escaping outward and prevent contaminants from entering the interior of the system. These two types of seals, although serving a similar function, differ from each other in construction, application and performance, therefore they should not be used interchangeably.

In this article you will learn what the key differences are between a rubber O-ring and a flat gasket, you will learn their individual characteristics and applications in various industries.

What is an O-ring?

O-ring is a sealing ring with a circular cross-section that can be used in both static and dynamic applications. The O-ring gasket is specially designed to be seated in a groove, i.e. a gland, and compressed between two mating surfaces during assembly. As pressure increases, the O-ring (made of NBR rubber, EPDM rubber, neoprene rubber or silicone rubber) is pressed against the walls of the groove, creating a tight and effective seal (the so-called self-sealing effect).

How to lubricate rubber O-rings?

Proper installation of O-rings prevents undesirable medium leaks as well as costly failures and downtime. In the case of O-type sealing rings it is worth lubricating them just before installation. Lubricating rubber O-rings provides protection against abrasion, compression or cutting. The lubricant also allows the ring to be properly seated between surfaces, prevents dirt from entering the device surface, prevents its displacement, and also protects machine and equipment parts from corrosion.

To lubricate O-rings made of EPDM rubber, NBR rubber, silicone rubber or other types, you can use silicone grease, copper grease, technical vaseline, as well as any lubricant that minimizes the coefficient of friction, does not cause swelling or operational fatigue of rubber seals. Lubricants are available in liquid, semi-liquid and solid forms.

O-ring - where is the sealing ring used?

Rubber O-rings are an extremely versatile and widely used sealing solution in both static and dynamic applications. At Power Rubber we produce O-type sealing rings from various elastomeric compounds, which allows them to seal practically any process medium. The product is characterized by high compressive strength, resistance to aggressive chemicals, a wide range of operating temperatures and high pressure.

Rubber O-rings - Applications:

  • automotive (fuel systems, braking systems)

  • hydraulics and pneumatics (hydraulic and pneumatic seals: cylinders, valves, pipe fittings)

  • HVAC systems (ventilation, heating, air conditioning)

  • food processing (sealing of production lines, processing equipment)

  • chemical industry (sealing of pumps, valves, pipelines)

What is a flat rubber gasket?

Flat rubber gaskets are gaskets that can be made in any shape. They are most often cut from rubber sheet. They can be produced from various materials, including silicone rubber, EPDM rubber, NBR rubber or neoprene rubber.

Flat rubber gaskets are installed between two flat surfaces, usually using bolted connections. Unlike a pressure-assisted O-ring gasket, a flat rubber gasket creates a sealed barrier between two surfaces under the influence of the compressive force of the bolts. They effectively prevent liquids and gases from escaping from the joint areas.

Versatile application of the rubber gasket

Rubber gaskets are considered a universal sealing solution in many branches of industry. At Power Rubber we offer standard rubber gaskets and also produce flat gaskets for special applications and according to individual requirements. They serve to join two flat surfaces, preventing leaks of liquids and gases. They are used in many industries, such as:

  • automotive (engine seals, fuel system seals, exhaust system seals)

  • construction (sewage installations, HVAC systems)

  • energy industry (generators, transformers, heat exchangers)

  • food and pharmaceutical industry (flat silicone gasket for contact with food and medicines)

  • aerospace and defense industry

  • medical devices

  • telecommunication equipment

  • transport

  • hydraulics (sealing of pipe joints, valves, pumps)

Flat rubber gaskets or O-rings - which to choose?

Choosing the right seal is crucial for equipment performance and continuity of the production process. It allows maintaining hermetic tightness, long-term reliability and avoiding costly repairs and downtime.

Before making a choice whether to buy flat rubber gaskets or an O-ring gasket, be sure to take into account the working environment and the function of the seal. Pay attention to:

Shape of the gasket

The shape of the gasket is one of the key criteria when choosing the right seal. If the application has a special groove (gland) for placing the gasket, the recommended solution is to use an O-ring gasket. Whereas, if the application involves two large, flat surfaces, then the recommended solution is to use a flat gasket (e.g. a valve flat gasket).

More information on correct fitting can be found in the article, how to select an O-ring for a groove.

Type of application (static or dynamic)

First of all, it is worth clarifying what the difference is between static and dynamic sealing. Static sealing is used between surfaces that do not move relative to each other. Dynamic sealing is used between two machine parts that move relative to each other, e.g. rotating shafts or piston rods.

Both O-type sealing rings and flat rubber gaskets work very well in static applications. However, for dynamic applications, O-rings made of rubber are the recommended choice.

Operating temperature range

The operating temperature range is a very important parameter. It determines the choice of the best material for the production of gaskets or rubber O-rings.

Pressure

An O-ring is an excellent choice for high-pressure applications. Meanwhile, a flat rubber gasket performs well in low and medium pressure environments. It is worth noting that using a flat rubber gasket in a high-pressure environment may cause it to be extruded from between the flanges or lead to degradation.

O-ring and flat gasket - how do they differ?

Feature

O-ring (sealing ring)

Flat gasket

Shape

Has the form of a ring with a circular cross-section (torus).

Has a flat shape, often tailored to a specific component, frequently with mounting holes for bolts.

Principle of operation

Placed in a special groove, creates a seal under the influence of increased medium pressure.

Mounted between two surfaces – sealing is achieved under the influence of bolt compressive force.

Pressure resistance

Designed for high-pressure applications; withstands large loads well.

Best suited for low or moderate pressure conditions.

Application

Used for dynamic and static seals in hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems.

Used mainly for static joints – e.g. flanges, covers, housings and engine components.

Operational characteristics

Flexible and resilient, provides long-lasting sealing even with moving parts.

Suitable for large contact areas, provides even distribution of pressure.

Rubber O-ring vs flat gasket

The dimensions and shape of flat gaskets can be adapted to almost any application, which allows them to perform sealing functions across a wide range of uses.

A round flat gasket will perform well in extreme working conditions where high strength over a wide temperature range is required. A rubber O-ring, due to its compressive strength, is perfectly suited for environments where extremely high pressures prevail.

Sealing rings with a circular cross-section have a better self-sealing effect than, for example, a valve flat gasket. This depends on the shape of the gasket. The round shape of O-rings allows for bidirectional sealing, and its tightness increases with increasing pressure. In the case of a flat gasket, the pressure is uniform over the entire contact surface and at very high pressure undesirable leaks may occur. For this reason O-rings have a better self-sealing effect.
