A gasket made to measure is a good solution when a standard product does not match the dimensions, shape or operating conditions of a given device. Making a gasket to order is useful, among other things, during machine overhauls, recreating unavailable parts and producing components according to technical documentation.

A gasket can be made based on:

• a supplied gasket or other sample,
• provided dimensions,
• a technical drawing,
• working documentation,
• a photo with marked dimensions – if it allows determining the component’s geometry.

Before production it is also worth specifying the material, hardness, operating temperature, type of medium, pressure and the estimated quantity. If not all parameters are known, you can describe the gasket’s application – on that basis the appropriate material and production method can be selected.

If you do not have a ready drawing or sample, you can provide the basic dimensions of the gasket. Depending on the shape, diameters, length, width, thickness and the spacing and diameters of holes may be needed, among others. Gaskets made to measure can be produced by different methods, depending on the type of material, gasket shape, required accuracy and the number of items ordered. For simple shapes traditional cutting methods can be used, while more complex components can be produced using appropriate machining technologies.

Gaskets ensure the proper functioning of many machines and tools in various industrial sectors. Manual cutting of rubber gaskets is a traditional method that requires specialized tools and experience. Precise cutting with a knife will make the order fit the individual needs of the customer.

Cutting gaskets with the WaterJet method

Waterjet cutting provides precise cutting. Cutting rubber gaskets in this way allows achieving any shape and pattern. The advantage of CNC waterjet cutting is the lack of distortions and discolorations. No finishing treatment is required either. Waterjet cutting (WaterJet) is recommended for complicated shapes. The method is efficient and produces less waste.

Rubber gaskets made from the highest quality materials are a guarantee of durability and reliability. They can be manufactured from rubber: EPDM, SBR, NBR, NR, CR. Each type of rubber has its particular properties. When choosing material for gasket production, this should be taken into account.

EPDM rubber

This is a synthetic rubber characterized by extraordinary durability. It is most commonly used in the automotive and construction industries. A product made from EPDM rubber is resistant to external factors (UV radiation, ozone). It has good tensile strength and is resistant to tearing under high stress. EPDM gaskets are used in many industries (aviation industry, military equipment, construction equipment, medicine). EPDM rubber shows chemical resistance, is resistant to acids and bases, which makes it excellent for use in the chemical and refinery industries.

SBR rubber

The exceptional properties of this synthetic rubber are used in the production of tires (aircraft, buses) and automotive parts (drive clutches). In the industrial sector SBR rubber is used in gaskets, cable insulation, hoses. SBR rubber has high tensile strength, is resistant to abrasion and ozone. It is used for manufacturing shoe soles and heels.

NBR rubber

Nitrile rubber is characterized by high resistance to the action of oils. NBR rubber is durable and elastic, and also resistant to heat. Due to its properties it is used in the automotive industry (engine hoses, O-rings), printing (roller production), medical (disposable gloves). Nitrile rubber has hypoallergenic properties, which is why it is used for producing protective gloves.

NR rubber

This is a natural, highly elastic and durable rubber. It is resistant to tearing and cracking, which is why it is used in the automotive industry for tire production. NR rubber is used in hoses and foam mattresses.

Factors affecting the degradation of rubber gaskets

A sealing failure can lead to fluid leakage. Production and reproduction of gaskets should be done from the highest quality rubber. However, there are factors that accelerate the degradation of rubber gaskets. These include: exposure to light, heat and oxygen (ozone). Continuous contact of gaskets with these factors can lead to changes in their physical and chemical properties. Exposure to UV radiation changes the rubber’s hardness, causing it to age, crack and fade.

How to prevent the deterioration of rubber gaskets?
