How to correctly measure O-rings?
O-rings are bidirectionally acting sealing elements that are used in static and dynamic systems. They are commonly used not only as seals, but also as drive belts. Made from standard, most popular materials they have a temperature resistance from -40 to +210 degrees Celsius. In metric sizes the O-ring diameter is graduated and changes every 1 mm, and the cross-section every 0.5 mm. To size O-rings you need the inner diameter (denoted by the letter D) and the cross-section width (denoted by the letter W). When checking the size of old, worn O-rings you should account for their deformation. For this reason it is a good idea to measure them on the sealed part. The cross-section can be checked from two sides and then averaged, which will be a more reliable result. This way of measuring O-rings will give greater certainty that the size will be ideal. When selecting an O-ring you should take into account not only its dimensions and the material of manufacture, but also the type of working medium with which the seal will come into contact, and the required chemical compatibility of the material.
