Solid silicone
Solid Silicone – Flexible and Resistant
Solid silicone, also known as silicone rubber, is a chemically inert, elastic material used mainly in industrial applications requiring resistance to extreme conditions. Also referred to as MVQ (siloxane polymers).
Advantages of Silicone
-
Excellent electrical properties
-
High elasticity and pressure damping
-
Controlled gas permeability
-
Resistance to torsion, compression, cracking
-
Stability during long-term oxidation
-
Operating temperature range: from −60 °C to +180 °C (temporarily up to +250 °C)
-
Protection against UV, IR, ozone
-
Steam resistance up to 3 bar
-
Non-flammable, durable, compliant with food-grade standards
-
Smooth and hygienic surface
-
Resistance to a wide range of chemical substances
Technical Parameters
The manufacturer must test:
-
Shore A hardness 50–70
-
Tensile strength and elongation at break (DIN, EN, ASTM standards)
-
Compression set according to DIN/BS
-
Thermal conductivity (VDE)
-
Brittleness temperature, UV resistance, electrical parameters, and operating range up to +180 °C
Food and Medical Certification
According to EU regulations, silicone may come into contact with food or skin only if it complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 – this guarantees food-safe silicone.
Colors and Areas of Application
Available colors: white, transparent, black, brick-red. Applications include:
-
Seals, gaskets
-
Electrical and thermal insulation
-
Food, medical, pharmaceutical, and packaging industries
-
Construction and machinery industry
Usage Limitations
Silicone is not used with:
-
Strong inorganic and organic acids/alkalis
-
Esters, ethers, aromatics/fuel components (e.g. toluene, xylene), ketones (acetone), steam > 100 °C
Resistance to Operating Environments
Silicones perform well in contact with:
-
Mineral oils, solvents, food-grade alcohols, water ≤ 100 °C, ozone, ammonia, margarine, vegetable oils, and low-concentration hydrocarbons
