Which Air Conditioning O-Rings Should You Choose?

29.10.2019

Air conditioning has become a standard feature in modern vehicles – whether cars, trucks, agricultural or special-purpose vehicles. By reducing the temperature, it increases comfort during journeys and makes traffic jams in crowded cities more bearable. Like any component, air conditioning systems require maintenance. Two of the most common tasks include refilling the refrigerant and repairing system leaks, which are often caused by damaged or outdated O-rings.

Rubber O-rings – a basic type of seal – are manufactured from various elastomer compounds. Each rubber compound is tailored for specific applications, meaning that the choice of O-ring material must match the refrigerant used in the system. POWER Rubber provides expert solutions and one of the best specialised O-ring ranges on the market.

Which A/C O-Rings to Choose?

A customer recently contacted us about air conditioning O-rings for his car. Our first question was: which refrigerant is in the vehicle’s system? As the customer didn’t know, we checked the make, model and year of production – and quickly identified it used the R-134a refrigerant. This is a widely used refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1430.

Thanks to our extensive experience, we knew that EPDM O-rings are ideal for R-134a-based A/C systems. We asked the customer to provide the O-ring dimensions – with help from our guide on how to measure rubber rings. After reading the article, the customer provided the internal diameter and the approximate thickness. Based on this, we advised on the correct size.

The order was quickly processed and dispatched the same day. The EPDM seals were delivered the next day, enabling swift installation and restoring the A/C system – for cool, comfortable driving. It’s worth noting that the EU Directive 2006/40/EC recommends using refrigerants with a GWP below 150. HFO-1234yf, developed by Honeywell and DuPont, meets this requirement but poses skin burn risks. Some car manufacturers, like Mercedes-Benz, have moved away from it due to lower safety ratings in crash tests.

Green O-Rings – A/C Seal Rings

One customer was unsure about the colour of the required O-rings. In Poland, green is the conventional colour for EPDM O-rings used with R-134a. To explain this, we use a local example: imagine most BMWs in the town of Pruszków are black – but if someone wants a green one, the manufacturer can deliver. It’s the same with O-rings: colour is optional. We’ve supplied red and even silver-grey EPDM O-rings – colour depends on visibility and use case.

Automotive A/C O-Rings – Why Green?

Green EPDM O-rings are highly visible in engine compartments, which are typically black or metallic. This visibility aids technicians during servicing. In our online shop, you’ll find the right green O-rings for car air conditioning systems. Properly chosen seals ensure long-term performance and cost savings on refrigerants like R-134a or HFO-1234yf.

Buy O-Rings for Car Air Conditioning Online

We often see forum posts like: “Need A/C O-rings for Passat”, “O-rings for Astra G”, or “Golf air con seal rings”. The most common advice? “Buy green ones, they’ll be fine.” But is that true?

Well – it depends.

Important Note: Colour ≠ Material

The colour of a rubber O-ring doesn’t determine the compound used or its chemical resistance. Choosing based on colour alone can be risky.

To ensure long-term performance of your car’s A/C system, trust technical sealing experts like POWER Rubber.
