Which Air Conditioning O-Rings Should You Choose?

29.07.2025
These days, air conditioning has become a basic element of equipment in both passenger cars, trucks, special vehicles, and agricultural vehicles. By reducing the temperature, it increases the comfort of the room or makes it more enjoyable to stand in traffic jams in crowded city streets. Like any vehicle equipment, air conditioning also needs servicing. The main elements checked during the service are topping up the refrigerant and repairing leaks in the cooling system, which can be caused by outdated hoses or damaged o-rings.

What is the refrigerant in air conditioning?

The refrigerant is a chemical compound capable of transitioning from a liquid to a gas and back. It is a substance used in air conditioners, refrigeration systems, and heat pumps. It circulates throughout the system, allowing the air conditioner to produce and push chilled air into the cabin. Not all cars use the same type of refrigerant in their air conditioning, so the same rubber sealing rings will not fit all brands.

What are the characteristics of rubber o-rings for air conditioning?

Rubber o-rings are specially designed sealing rings that play a crucial role in ensuring optimal performance and efficiency in HVAC systems. Their main function is to provide airtight sealing and durability, preventing refrigerant leaks and maintaining optimal pressure in the system. O-rings are made from various materials that offer unique properties, making them suitable for different applications. Choosing the right seal depends on working conditions, specific air conditioning requirements, such as the refrigerant used, or the temperature range of operation.

What are the consequences of leaks in the air conditioning system?

Using high-quality air conditioning o-rings is crucial. Any leaks can lead to:

  • loss of refrigerant
  • reduced air conditioning efficiency
  • damage or even corrosion of system components
  • increased maintenance and repair costs

At Power Rubber, we provide specialized o-rings in various sizes made from different rubber compounds (HNBR, NBR, EPDM, VMQ, FKM, etc.), allowing for customization to specific applications.

By investing in professional sealing rings for air conditioning, you minimize the risk of failures caused by unwanted refrigerant leaks and increase the reliability of the entire system.

Characteristics of air conditioning o-rings

Undoubtedly, air conditioning systems are essential for comfort and safety during travel on hot days. O-rings are small but crucial elements that ensure the smooth operation of these systems. They play a key role in sealing connections and preventing refrigerant leaks.

Chemical Resistance
To ensure system tightness and durability, o-rings used for sealing connections must be made from materials resistant to the refrigerant used in automotive air conditioning and synthetic oils present in the system (PAG, POE, PAO). Excellent chemical resistance is provided by specialized rubber compounds such as HNBR, FKM Viton®, EPDM.

High-Temperature Resistance
Air conditioning systems experience varying temperature conditions. At Power Rubber, we offer a wide range of o-rings that are resistant to high temperatures in the system.

Pressure Stability
In air conditioning systems, o-rings used for connections between system elements must be made from materials with the appropriate hardness and mechanical resistance to withstand loads without deformation that can lead to leaks.

Material Compatibility
When selecting a sealing ring, you should consider the type of refrigerant and the elements it comes into contact with. Improper seals used in air conditioning systems can react chemically, leading to deterioration, degradation, or even corrosion of system components. Therefore, it is essential to adhere to the selection rules for seals in various types of air conditioning systems.

How to choose the right o-rings for air conditioning?

One of our customers needed air conditioning o-rings for their car. The first thing we asked was what refrigerant was in their car's system. In this case, the customer did not have this knowledge, so we decided to help. By verifying the brand and model of the car along with the production year, we quickly realized that the R-134a refrigerant was used. A old coefficient with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) value of 1430. Our experience and knowledge allowed us to apply the best sealing ring for this type of refrigerant - we used EPDM o-rings for air conditioning.

Next, we asked the customer to provide the dimensions of the rubber o-rings they needed. (Our Guide on Measuring Rubber Rings came in handy here: /how-to-measure-o-rings/). After reading the article, the customer knew how to provide the correct values, i.e., provided the inner diameter by measuring the outer diameter of the o-ring and provided the approximate thickness. Therefore, after receiving the dimensions, we advised on choosing the right size for the customer, who relied on us - Rubber O-Ring Specialists.

The customer's order was passed to the warehouse, where the order was placed and then shipped on the same day to the address provided by the customer, and the seals made of EPDM compound were received by our customer the next day, allowing for the efficient installation of the system and the joy of traveling in a car with efficient air conditioning.

According to EU Directive No. 2006/40/EC, refrigerants used in air conditioners, air conditioning systems, and refrigeration equipment should have a GWP level below 150. Here, a solution was provided by two industry leaders in the chemical sector: Honeywell and DuPont. The product is the HFO-1234yf refrigerant. Although this refrigerant complies with the standard, it is a hazardous substance that can cause skin burns. Confirmation of this is the withdrawal of this refrigerant from air conditioning systems by car manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz due to lower results in crash tests.

Green o-rings - Air Conditioning O-Rings

One of the doubts we had to resolve with the customer was the color of the o-rings that met his requirements. And it is worth noting that in our Polish market, it is accepted that for EPDM compound, i.e., o-rings filled with R-134a refrigerant should be green.

And here, our best story explaining the colors comes in: Imagine that in the vicinity of our company and Warsaw, there is a town called Pruszkow (according to information available at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruszk%C3%B3w, with a population of 60,737 in 2016), where a group of residents buys BMW cars.

What color are BMW cars in Pruszkow?

Yes, it must be admitted that most customers respond that they are black.

What if another resident of Pruszkow wants to buy a green BMW?

If he asks for green, that's what will be produced. And this is exactly the same with the production of EPDM o-rings. We have a whole range of colors to choose from. From our experience, we offered customers red EPDM seals, and even gray, verging on silver color. Everything depends on the needs in which the seals are expected to function.

Automotive Air Conditioning O-Rings - Green O-Rings

Green O-ring is, as we mentioned earlier, one of the color options for EPDM compound (ethylene propylene diene monomer). The green color was chosen to increase visibility. Such o-rings are much easier to notice around the air conditioning systems near the car engine, which, as we know, is black and silver in color. Black is susceptible to dirt from contact with oils and greases, as well as dust and other contaminants collected during continuous car operation.

Air Conditioning O-Rings - Opinions of "experts" regarding the right choice

"Passat needs air conditioning o-rings," "Astra G air conditioning o-rings," "Golf air conditioning o-rings," such phrases are often found on forums for various car brands. This is where the biggest experts have only one answer: "buy green o-rings and it will be great."

Is this entirely true?

Should we rely solely on the green color of the o-rings?

The answer is very simple:

It depends, however, we want to emphasize a very important factor:

The color of the rubber o-ring does not indicate the rubber compound used. At the same time, the color does not guarantee the appropriate chemical resistance.

So, what to choose?

If you want to be sure that your automotive air conditioning o-rings will function as long as possible, it is worth choosing Specialists in the technical sealing industry - POWER Rubber
