Fugitive Emission Standards: ISO 15848-1 and TA Luft
What are fugitive emissions?
Fugitive emissions are small, unintentional and uncontrolled releases of gases (e.g. methane, CO₂), liquids (oil, water) or vapours from industrial equipment or processes. They often occur during extraction, processing or transport of fuels. Main sources include valves, flanges, tanks and pipelines.
Environmental impact of fugitive emissions
These emissions degrade air quality, contribute to global warming, smog, and cause serious health issues such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
Main sources of leakage
Industrial facilities like chemical plants and refineries. Valves are responsible for 50–60% of fugitive emissions. Valve stem seals play a critical role in preventing leaks.
Causes of fugitive emissions
-
Equipment wear or failure
-
Design flaws
-
Improper installation of seals
-
Inadequate maintenance
-
Pressure control failures
Why preventing fugitive emissions matters
Environmental protection: Effective sealing solutions prevent air pollution.
Cost savings: Gas losses reduce productivity and increase operational costs.
Safety: Emissions can expose workers and nearby residents to harmful gases and pose explosion risks.
Power Rubber provides advanced sealing solutions to enhance safety and sustainability in industrial environments.
Regulations limiting fugitive emissions
Strict regulations ensure industrial processes meet environmental and health standards. These laws aim to unify emission control systems and promote clean production.
ISO 15848-1 standard
ISO 15848-1 defines test procedures for assessing valve sealing performance using helium or methane. It's crucial for oil and gas industries where leak prevention is essential.
Three classification levels:
-
Tightness class: A (most leak-proof), B, C
-
Endurance class: CO1–CO3 (on/off valves), CC1–CC3 (control valves)
-
Temperature class: from -196 °C to +400 °C
TA Luft
TA Luft is a German regulation limiting emissions of VOCs and other pollutants. The 2021 version aligns with ISO 15848-1 and introduces seal classes: LA, LB, LC.
How seals prevent fugitive emissions
Seals are essential for preventing leaks in industrial systems. At Power Rubber, we offer high-performance seals tailored to pressure, temperature, and chemical exposure, with expert advice on installation and maintenance.
