Purpose:
The main purpose of safety barriers is to ensure road traffic safety. They are used in locations where a vehicle crossing the road edge or exceeding the dividing lane poses a serious threat to road users. Safety barriers are used on viaducts and embankments, where there are permanent objects and obstacles close to the road (poles, buildings, etc.), with which a collision could be particularly dangerous.
A properly designed, manufactured, and installed road safety barrier should:
- prevent a vehicle from crossing the road edge or the dividing lane onto the cross-traffic lane,
- redirect the vehicle to a traffic lane, parallel or close to parallel to the barrier, with minimal risk to other vehicles. There should be no rebound or elastic rejection of the vehicle,
- cause minimal damage to the vehicle during a collision, limiting it preferably to the bodywork elements, without seriously hindering the ability to control the direction and path of movement,
- clearly and distinctly define the external edge of the road or lane,
