Purpose:

The primary purpose of safety barriers is to ensure road traffic safety. They are used in locations where a vehicle driving off the road edge or crossing the dividing line poses a serious threat to road users. Safety barriers are installed on viaducts and embankments, where there are fixed objects and obstacles (poles, buildings, etc.) close to the road, and collision could be particularly dangerous.

A correctly designed, manufactured, and installed road safety barrier should:

• prevent a vehicle from driving off the road edge or through the dividing line onto the opposite direction lane,
• redirect the vehicle onto a traffic lane parallel or close to parallel to the barrier, with minimal risk to other vehicles. In particular, there should be no rebound or elastic rejection of the vehicle,
• cause minimal damage to the vehicle in the event of a collision, ideally limited to bodywork elements, without seriously impeding the ability to control the direction and path of movement,
• clearly and legibly define the outer edge of the road or lane,
