Purpose:

The primary purpose of safety barriers is to ensure road traffic safety. They are used in places where a vehicle veering off the road edge or crossing the dividing lane poses a serious threat to road users' safety. Safety barriers are used on overpasses and embankments where there are permanent objects and obstacles close to the road (poles, buildings, etc.), collisions with which can be particularly dangerous.

A properly designed, made, and installed road safety barrier should:

• prevent a vehicle from veering off the road edge or crossing the dividing lane onto the oncoming traffic lane,
• redirect the vehicle onto the traffic lane, parallel or close to parallel to the barrier, with minimal risk to other vehicles. There should be no bounce or elastic rejection of the vehicle,
• cause minimal damage to the vehicle during a collision, limiting damage to the bodywork components only, without severely impeding control over the vehicle's direction and path,
• clearly define the outer edge of the road or lane,
