Foam gaskets

Foam gaskets are divided into two types: gaskets with open cells and closed cells. They provide reliable sealing between two surfaces, keeping unwanted substances away from a particular device or equipment component. They help maintain heat and cold, have sound-absorbing properties, and the ability to dampen vibrations. Self-adhesive foam gaskets are coated with adhesive on one or both sides for easier installation. They serve as a versatile sealing solution for a wide range of products and applications.

What are foam seals?

Foam gaskets create a strong and durable connection between two surfaces for insulation, cushioning, noise reduction, limiting the penetration of liquids and contaminants. They come in two variations:

Open-cell foam gaskets

The cells are open, and their structure is porous enough to allow the flow of air, small particles, and water. The material is soft, flexible, resistant to mold, has soundproofing properties, and low compression set. They are mainly used in applications where shock and vibration reduction are necessary. They have better vibration damping ability.

Closed-cell foam gaskets

The cells are pressed together, preventing air, moisture, and small particles from penetrating the gasket. They are commonly used in applications exposed to various environmental conditions (water, solvents, contaminants, etc.). Resistant to weather conditions, making them ideal for outdoor use.

Application of foam gaskets

Foam gasket can be used in many industries, including automotive, electronic, medical, construction, and aerospace. It is commonly used to protect devices from vibrations and high temperatures, seal electronic equipment, external fixtures, lighting enclosure frames, HVAC systems, building insulation, window and door seals, as well as consumer products.

Foam gaskets - properties

As mentioned earlier, foam gaskets come in various structures. Depending on the selected rubber compound, they can exhibit properties such as:

  • resistance to weather conditions
  • resistance to water vapor and environmental factors, including UV radiation and ozone
  • compatibility with refrigerants and various chemical substances
  • ability to dampen vibrations and oscillations
  • recovery to its original shape after compression and extension
  • excellent electrical insulation
  • resistance to a wide range of operating temperatures

The benefits of using foam seals

Foam gaskets are made of a highly efficient and extremely versatile material that brings many benefits, here they are:

  • vibration dampening ability
  • cushioning
  • soundproofing properties
  • helps keep unwanted substances away from the device
  • thermal insulation (foam gaskets for windows retain heat in the room)
  • protection of devices against shocks and high temperatures
  • ensures reliable sealing
  • protection against drafts (foam gaskets for doors secure the gap between the door and the floor, eliminating drafts and preventing pollutants from entering the living space)
