EPDM gasket
EPDM gasket thanks to its properties has a wide range of applications. This synthetic rubber is an exceptionally durable material resistant to weather conditions, direct sunlight, water, various categories of chemicals. Check what EPDM rubber seals (including self-adhesive seals) are, what properties they have, and where they can be applied.
What is EPDM?
EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) is a rubber with a wide range of applications. Products made from this material show resistance to weather conditions, sunlight, and oxygen. This type of rubber is resistant to aging, the action of many diluted acids and bases, as well as water. It is an odorless material whose color does not change and is resistant to heat. EPDM rubbers vary in ethylene content and the dienes used (also the price of products varies). This diversity can affect the physical properties of products made of EPDM. Additionally, the material provides high tensile strength (resistance to cracking under high tension) and elasticity (ability to return to its original state after compression or extension). Products made from EPDM usually have hardness from 40 to 90 ShA (on the Shore A scale).
EPDM Seals
EPDM seals compared to silicone rubber are more resistant to abrasion, cutting, and tearing. EPDM rubber also shows better tensile strength than silicone rubber. It is used, among others, in the automotive industry or as seals for windows and doors, while silicone will find applications in the aerospace or food industry.
Self-Adhesive EPDM Seal
Self-adhesive EPDM seals (with adhesive tape) are available on the market. The self-adhesive rubber seal is easy to install – simply peel off the adhesive bottom in one motion. When using self-adhesive seals, make sure that the surface you apply them to is clean, dry, and free from dust and grease. You can use a degreasing agent to wipe the surface. The self-adhesive seal for windows uses EPDM as the only material, which is classified as technical rubber. The self-adhesive seal has many uses. It is perfect for sealing all kinds of spaces and gaps. Its price depends on the intended use and size. It can be cut to the preferred size by the customer (the price per running meter requires a minimum purchase of 1 m) and used to seal mobile elements (doors, flaps) and as pads to level out rough edges of machine parts.
Properties of seals made of EPDM rubber:
- EPDM seals show excellent tolerance to low temperatures ranging from -45°C
- effective performance in temperatures up to +145°C
- excellent insulator (electrical insulation, acoustic insulation from equipment noise)
- high chemical resistance (hot water and steam, silicone greases, oils, sodium hydroxide solutions, many diluted acids and chemicals)
- EPDM seal is resistant to aging
- very good sealing against water, wind, mud, dust
- resistance to weather conditions
- resistance to cracking and elasticity
- provide reliable, long-lasting sealing (even in demanding weather conditions)
- rubber color does not change (does not discolor the surface)
This synthetic elastomer is not resistant to some categories of chemicals (gasoline, engine and diesel oil, synthetic naphthenic oils).
Application of EPDM seals
Seals made of EPDM rubber are characterized by very good thermal and mechanical properties. Thanks to high tear resistance and elasticity, they are ideal for use in vibration isolation mounts during machine operation. The self-adhesive seal has the same properties as the non-adhesive seal. Seals made of synthetic rubber used in production ensure high durability of products.
Check where EPDM seals will find application, here are some of them:
- door seals (including self-adhesive ones)
- window seals (also as self-adhesive PVC window seals)
- refrigerator and freezer seals
- automotive industry
- construction industry (collars for roof windows)
- electrical seals
- waterproofing
- protection of sharp edges and corners
