ACM Rubber – Acrylic Rubber

ACM rubber is a type of acrylic rubbers which are copolymers of esters. These esters are compounds derived from acrylic acid. Rubber is formed when esters are mixed with acrylonitrile or ethers in the manufacturing process. The rubber polymerization takes place in an aqueous emulsion. This product is then cross-linked.

ACM rubber Properties

ACM is not destroyed by the presence of sulfur and chlorine in the working environment. It can be used wherever improvers are used in oils and greases. With high chemical resistance, ACM can deform under heavy pressure. It also shows a reduced breaking strength.

The mechanical properties of this rubber are:

  • resistant in temperatures from -20 to – 40 degrees Celsius,
  • this elastomer can withstand a temperature load of 150 degrees Celsius,
  • short-term resistance to temperature load of 175 degrees Celsius,
  • compared to natural rubber or styrene-butadiene copolymer, ACM does not achieve such strength values, nor is it so flexible,
  • behaves well in the atmosphere of ozone and various atmospheric influences,
  • resistant to hot petroleum oils, especially those containing sulfur,
  • it is resistant to swelling.

ACM rubber is not resistant to hot water, steam, acids and bases. It is also unstable in the environment of aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons and brake fluids containing glycol.

Its electrical properties depend on how well it absorbs water – so they are moderate, depending on its composition.

ACM rubber Application

ACM rubber is primarily used wherever there is a need for high resistance to industrial oils and work in higher temperature ranges (also where hot air is used). They are often used by the automotive industry (seals), they are also used in the production of O-rings, hoses, adhesives, various types of binders and covering materials. ACM is a good base for sealing compounds.

ACM rubber has several trade names. You can meet it on the market as

  • Hycar 4000
  • Cyanacryl
  • Alaprim AR
  • Europrene
  • Nipol

It is more resistant than NBR (nitrile vulcanization) to oxygen, ozone and oils.
