HNBR Rubber – Hydrated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber

HNBR rubber is Acrylonitrile rubber, HNBR for short is a copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene. From a chemical point of view, the double bond of the butadiene component was fully or partially hydrogenated during the reaction. Due to peroxide cross-linking, the material obtains temperature and oxidation stability. It is a very durable and abrasion-resistant material.

What does the abbreviation HNBR stand for?

Hydrogenated nitrile rubber is an extension of the abbreviation HNBR. It is a very durable rubber, which also has a media resistance much higher than in the case of NBR. It is a mixture of synthetic rubbers designed in such a way that it is possible to perform work in conditions with a higher temperature than the standard one. It was also important that it was also resistant to mineral oils and greases.

HNBR rubbers – Properties

HNBR rubber is a very durable material. It perfectly copes with high temperature conditions. Production plants praise it for being very resistant to abrasion and any mechanical damage. Rubber is very durable.

HNBR – Temperature range

Depending on the composition obtained in the course of production, it works in extreme temperature conditions, such as -30 to 150 degrees Celsius.

The rubber structure does not react in the presence of mineral oils and greases and in the presence of vegetable and animal fats (note – in the presence of fats of organic origin, it is short-term resistant at temperatures up to 170 degrees Celsius). The presence of ozone and diesel fuels does not affect the damage of this rubber. The rubber is also not susceptible to the action of aliphatic hydrocarbons – gasoline, propane – butane compounds. HNBR is great in an environment of diluted acids, bases and salts. This also applies to situations where these environments are accompanied by increased temperature and acid gases or glycol mixtures. The elevated temperature is exactly 150 degrees Celsius. Sometimes HNBR can periodically withstand temperatures as high as 190 degrees Celsius. Interestingly, this rubber does not show direct resistance to water and engine oils and greases, which contain the addition of anti-corrosion protectors. In an aquatic environment, rubber behaves well up to 149 degrees Celsius. It also shows poor resistance to fuels with a very high content of aromatic compounds, such as gasoline or alcohol mixtures, ketones, esters and ethers. HBNR is resistant to hydraulic fluids such as HFA, HFB, HCF.

HNBR rubber Application

HNBR elastomers were created quite recently, and their main goal is to improve the mechanical resistance of NBR rubbers and to maintain resistance to mineral oils. It can be said that HNBR fills the market gap between NBR O-rings and those made of EPDM and FKM. This rubber is suitable for the production of various seals in places where work is performed at high temperatures, under pressure and where there is a high risk of damage. An example of a product made using HNBR is an air compressor in compressors. Elements of fuel hoses can also be made of it.
