Types of adhesives for screws

There are various types of anaerobic adhesives available on the market, which are divided based on the strength of bond they provide.

Thread Lockers Types:

  • anaerobic adhesive with low bond strength (removable)
  • anaerobic adhesive with medium bond strength (semi-permanent)
  • anaerobic adhesive with high bond strength (permanent)

Thread Lockers Colors:

  • blue - removable thread locker
  • red - strong thread locker

Adhesive for Screws with Low Bond Strength
A weak thread locker has low strength (known as easily removable adhesive). It is used to secure a thread from loosening in applications not exposed to vibrations and shocks. It allows for easy removal of the thread with ordinary tools without requiring much force.

Adhesive for Screws with Medium Bond Strength
The blue thread locker is a single-component product with medium strength and viscosity. It is a semi-permanent adhesive used to secure screws (helps prevent leaks, shocks, and vibrations), as well as seal and close all types of screw connections. The blue thread locker is used for threads that may require removal using hand tools. The curing time for the blue adhesive is between 5 to 15 minutes.

Adhesive for Screws with High Bond Strength
Red thread locker is a highly permanent anaerobic adhesive with low viscosity. It is characterized by high strength and resistance to heavy loads. The product is designed for sealing and locking screw connections. The red anaerobic adhesive has excellent thermal and chemical resistance. Permanent adhesives protect threads from rust and corrosion, as well as prevent loosening and unthreading due to vibrations and shocks. The red thread locker cures between 40 minutes to 24 hours. This type of adhesive can only be removed by heat (requires spot heating of the screw head to around 250°C).

Using glue for screws

Anaerobic adhesives are resistant to chemical substances and mechanical abrasion. They are characterized by thermal stability at room temperature. They possess unique properties that make them perfect for applications such as fastening, bonding, and sealing of elements like screws, nuts, and threads.

The three main areas of application for anaerobic adhesives are:

  • securing screws from loosening
  • sealing threads (protection against leaks)
  • fastening and protecting metal systems from corrosion

Anaerobic adhesives are used in various industries:

  • aviation
  • manufacture of agricultural and construction machinery
  • defense industry
  • automotive industry
  • energy industry

How long does threadlocker take to dry?

Anaerobic adhesive is an oxygen-free adhesive. It reacts upon contact with metal, which acts as a catalyst. The hardening mechanism starts when it comes into contact with a metal surface and oxygen is cut off. If the adhesive comes into contact with air, it will not harden.

The hardening time of anaerobic adhesive for securing threads and screws depends on the thickness of the bond, temperature, and the material used.

Surface reactivity significantly impacts the speed of anaerobic adhesive hardening. Active materials (copper, brass, iron, aluminum, nickel, zinc, steel) are susceptible to hardening with oxygen-free adhesives. When joining active materials, the hardening mechanism starts quickly, creating durable connections without the need for a special activator. The adhesive hardens in a few minutes, with complete hardening occurring within 24 hours.

Oxygen-free adhesives are suitable for joining elements made of passive materials (e.g., stainless steel, glass, plastics, painted finishes, aluminum) in combination with an activator for anaerobic adhesives, which accelerates the hardening process. The use of an activator shortens the hardening time of the adhesive. In this case, the adhesive for threaded joints dries in a few minutes to several hours.

Unscrewing a screw with glued thread

A hard-to-remove, strong screw adhesive is an extremely durable and difficult-to-remove preparation. The glue creates a permanent connection that is not easy to separate. So, how do you unscrew a screw with glued threads? Here are some tips:

Step 1 - Clean the screw surface from dust and dirt.

Step 2 - Heat the screw head locally using a burner or heat gun at a distance of about 8 cm. Make sure there is nothing flammable near the flame.

Step 3 - Heating will soften the glue, loosening the connection between the screw and the thread lock. Then, using hand tools (wrench, socket of the appropriate size), unscrew the screw. Done!

There are also several chemical substances that can dissolve the glue. These include: acetone, methylene chloride, toluene. Use caution when using them!

Anaerobic Adhesive Drying Time
We answer the question of how long anaerobic adhesive dries. In general, the initial drying time for thread adhesives is about 60 minutes. Full capacity and strength are usually achieved after 24 hours.
