Steam hoses - Properties

Steam hoses are special hoses designed for the transportation of saturated steam, operating at working pressures ranging from 6 to 18 bar and with a maximum temperature reaching from 160°C to 200°C. They are mostly made of synthetic EPDM rubber, resistant to high temperatures and chemical compounds.

Types of Steam

Steam is the gaseous state of water. There are three types of steam:

  • dry (remains entirely in a gaseous state)
  • wet (contains water droplets)
  • superheated

A steam hose should be properly selected depending on the type of steam being transferred. For superheated steam, it is recommended to use metal or Teflon hoses. Types of Steam Hoses

According to the technical standard EN ISO 6134, steam hoses are classified into:

  • low-pressure (maximum working pressure up to 6 bar, 164°C)
  • high-pressure (maximum working pressure 18 bar, 210°C)

Both types are further divided into two classes: A and B. Class A hoses have an outer layer that is not resistant to oil. Class B represents a flexible steam hose with an oil-resistant outer layer (e.g., oil hoses 0.6 MPa).

What properties do EPDM rubber hoses for hot water and steam possess?

  • Resistance to high temperatures
  • Resistance to chemical compounds
  • Resistance to atmospheric conditions (ozone, UV radiation)
  • Resistance to abrasion
  • Resistance to acids and bases

Rubber Hose for Hot Water

A flexible hose for hot water, like a steam hose, is made of EPDM rubber. Textile braids are used to increase strength and provide thermal protection. A textile-reinforced hose for hot water is additionally resistant to abrasion and ozone. The hot water hose is designed to operate at pressures up to 5 MPa and at temperatures up to 120°C. Industrial hoses for hot water are used in various industries such as the chemical industry, shipbuilding, agriculture, and automotive industry.

FDA approved hoses for hot water can be used for contact with food and drinking water.

Rubber hoses for water come in different thicknesses. The hose diameter (e.g., water hose thickness 2 mm, water hose thickness 4 mm) determines the water pressure and depends on factors such as the length of the hose.

Application of hoses for steam water

Steam hoses are a key component of industrial installations, used in technological processes that require the transport of steam at high pressure and temperature. They are used in the chemical, food, energy industries, as well as in heating and cleaning systems. They must be resistant to temperatures up to +210°C and pressures up to 18 bars. They are most commonly made of EPDM rubber, resistant to aging and high temperatures, with steel braid reinforcements to increase durability. Saturated and superheated steam hoses differ in construction – those for superheated steam require even greater thermal resistance. Proper selection and maintenance of steam hoses ensure the safety and efficiency of the installation.

Benefits of using hoses for steam.

Steam hoses provide safe and efficient transport of steam in industrial systems, eliminating the risk of leaks and energy loss. With resistance to high temperatures (up to +210°C) and working pressure (up to 18 bars), they ensure reliability even in demanding conditions. Their construction, based on EPDM rubber and steel reinforcement, provides resistance to aging, cracks, and aggressive chemical agents. Antistatic models reduce the risk of sparking, enhancing safety in the workplace. Highly flexible hoses facilitate installation and use, especially in tight spaces. Regular inspection and proper hose selection contribute to the long service life of the installation, optimizing operating costs.
