Rubber Cords – Characteristics of Rubber Products

24.07.2023

Rubber cords are characterized by high durability, flexibility, bendability, resistance to mechanical damage, high pressure, and have good insulation properties. This is a result of the calibration process that takes place right after the production stage – it gives the cords a consistent cross-section and diameter along the entire length of the production batch.

Rubber cords are versatile products found in practically every industrial sector worldwide. When properly selected for their working environment, they guarantee maximum sealing and long lifespan.

Round and Square Profiles

There are two types of rubber cords, with round and square profiles. The first ones are the most commonly used and are widespread in the automotive, food, and household industries. They are the cheapest and most versatile solution for various uses.

Square profiles mainly include cords with a square, trapezoidal, or rectangular cross-section, but as we know, a square is also a rectangle, so we can divide them into rectangular and other cords. Square rubber cords are most commonly used in construction but also in daily life, such as for sealing packaging or covers where a flat surface is needed.

Versatile Applications of Rubber Cords

Both solid and cellular rubber cords are widely used in many industries due to their properties. Depending on the application, various raw material mixes are used, such as:

  • NBR (Nitrile Rubber) is resistant to chemicals, oils, and fuels. It is used for sealing joints at temperatures ranging from -30 °C to 120 °C. This type of rubber seal is widely used in the automotive industry.

  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) cords are resistant to harsh weather conditions. They resist steam, brake fluids, and hydraulic fluids. Due to their excellent resistance to UV radiation and ozone, EPDM cellular cords are suitable for outdoor use.

  • Silicone Rubber has excellent compressibility over a wide temperature range. Silicone is highly flexible and resistant to high temperatures. Silicone cellular cords can operate at temperatures from -50 to 240°C.

  • Neoprene (CR) Cords are resistant to chemicals, oils, animal fats, and weather conditions. These chloroprene cords also have good fire resistance.

  • FKM (Viton®) rubber cords are resistant to aggressive chemicals. Due to their excellent thermal resistance, they can operate at temperatures from -60 °C to +200 °C. These seals have a high ability to prevent gas permeability and are practically non-flammable.

Solid and Cellular Rubber Cords

Cords made from various mixes find use in:

  • Shipbuilding industry (wide cross-sections), for sealing

  • Ports, docks, and ramps (wide cross-sections), protecting ships and buildings from impact

  • Autoclaves

  • Automotive industry

  • Construction industry

  • Agriculture (mainly in machines)

  • As rubber bumpers

  • In food industry

  • In household appliances and RTV equipment

  • Automotive industry

  • Machine industry

  • Sealing electronics and ventilation

The application also depends on the cross-section and thickness of the cord itself.
