Slip Resistance Rating: How to Assess It?
What is anti-slip flooring?
Anti-slip flooring is a surface designed to increase friction and improve grip, thereby reducing the risk of slipping or falling. This is essential in environments exposed to water, oils, or contaminants such as grease or fuel.
Moisture, oil, or dust can drastically reduce friction between footwear and the floor. That’s why our non-slip rubber floor tiles are ideal for residential areas (garages, bathrooms, basements), commercial spaces (workshops, warehouses), and public places (schools, hospitals, playgrounds, swimming pools).
Slip resistance standards
The DIN 51130 and DIN 51097 standards are internationally recognised for assessing slip resistance. DIN 51130 applies to footwear environments, while DIN 51097 is specific to barefoot areas like pools and showers.
DIN 51130 Standard
DIN 51130 measures slip resistance using the ramp test method. During the test, a floor sample is coated with oil and placed on an inclined ramp. A test subject walks on it in safety shoes. The maximum slip angle is measured, and a rating from R9 to R13 is given.
Anti-slip classes (R-value)
-
R9: Basic slip resistance (slope 3–10°) – suitable for dry indoor spaces (entrance halls, corridors, stairs).
-
R10: Medium slip resistance (10–19°) – for slightly wet environments (kitchens, garages, sanitary areas).
-
R11: High slip resistance (19–27°) – suitable for high-moisture areas (bathrooms, corridors, laundry rooms).
-
R12: Very high slip resistance (27–35°) – ideal for industrial kitchens, commercial floors, and wet zones.
-
R13: Maximum slip resistance (over 35°) – for the most demanding conditions (poolsides, changing rooms, public showers, industrial food areas).
DIN 51097 Standard
DIN 51097 applies to barefoot wet areas. The ramp test uses soapy water as a contaminant. Based on the slip angle, tiles are classified as:
-
Class A: 12–18° – changing rooms
-
Class B: 18–24° – pool surrounds
-
Class C: over 24° – water-access ramps and stairs
