Abrasion Testing of Rubber Products According to DIN 53516

The DIN 53516 European standard outlines testing methods for evaluating the abrasion resistance of rubber products. One of the main methods is to conduct abrasion resistance tests using a specialised machine. This standard is widely used in industries such as textile, aerospace, automotive, plastics manufacturing, rubber components, and sealing systems.

Rubber Abrasion Testing Machine

Rubber and elastomer products are often subjected to heavy loads and high wear in industrial applications. Abrasion resistance is critical for drive belts, rubber floorings, tyres, and industrial hoses. To determine the durability of such products, a rubber abrasion tester complying with DIN 53516 is used.

The device tests the abrasion resistance of vulcanised thermoset rubber and thermoplastic elastomers exposed to wear. It consists of a rotating cylindrical drum covered with abrasive material, a motor drive, and a sample holder. Some models also include a rotation counter.

Test Procedure

The cylindrical drum rotates with abrasive paper for a defined time and under a set load, scraping the material off the sample. During the test, the sample is also rotated and moves transversely to ensure even abrasion. The final assessment includes evaluating surface condition, mass loss, volume, and thickness. Volume loss is calculated based on the material’s density.
