AMS 3337

07.11.2023

In the aerospace industry, components must be manufactured from materials that are highly efficient, durable, heat-resistant, and fatigue-resistant. Above all, these materials must comply with strict standards and regulations. To support these requirements, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) developed the Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS), which are widely used across the aviation and space sectors.

AMS specifications are compiled into an extensive database that is continuously updated in line with advancements in processing technologies and material science. These standards cover specific directives that govern procedures, equipment, and processes related to aerospace-grade material processing.

Applications of AMS-Compliant Seals

Seals that meet AMS standards are commonly used in aerospace hydraulic systems, fuel systems, brake systems, landing gear, and components of space shuttle systems.

PVMQ silikon

Why Is AMS Certification So Important?

Materials used in aerospace must meet strict regulatory compliance. All components used in aviation must be made from materials that conform to AMS standards and guidelines.

The AMS (Aerospace Material Specification) ensures that manufacturers adhere to thorough testing protocols to evaluate key material properties such as thermal, mechanical, optical, chemical, and electrical performance. Compliance with AMS standards is essential for quality and safety in aviation and space manufacturing. It helps:

  • Establish high-quality benchmarks for materials

  • Minimise production defects and failures

  • Ensure traceability of parts and materials

  • Meet regulatory and certification requirements within the aerospace sector

PVMQ Silicone Rubber

What Is AMS 3337 Silicone?

AMS 3337 refers specifically to phenyl-methyl silicone rubber (PVMQ), an advanced elastomer used in extreme low-temperature environments. This specification includes rubber sheets, strips, tubing, extrusions, and moulded components with a hardness range of 65–75 Shore A.

What Makes PVMQ Unique?

PVMQ is a type of silicone where methyl groups are replaced by phenyl groups, significantly improving its resistance to low temperatures. Phenyl content enhances several performance attributes:

  • Oxidation resistance

  • Abrasion resistance

  • Thermal stability

  • Optical clarity

PVMQ is developed specifically to maintain its elasticity and sealing properties in ultra-low temperature environments — a critical requirement for aerospace and cryogenic applications.

Technical Properties

AMS 3337-grade silicone rubber (PVMQ) is engineered for use in temperatures ranging from –85°C to +230°C, remaining flexible and functional throughout this range. It offers excellent resistance to:

  • Weather conditions

  • UV and ozone exposure

  • Petroleum-based oils with high aniline content

It is also an excellent electrical insulator. However, PVMQ is not suitable for use with petrol, aromatic fuels, or petroleum fluids with low aniline points due to the risk of excessive swelling.

Aerospace and Industrial Applications

PVMQ has the lowest glass transition temperature (around –120°C) of all elastomers, making it ideal for operations in extremely cold environments such as outer space. It is commonly used in:

  • Aerospace and aviation systems

  • Military and defence equipment

  • Cryogenic systems

  • Pharmaceutical and medical devices

  • Oil and gas industry

  • Petrochemical systems

Its ability to maintain flexibility and performance under harsh thermal conditions makes PVMQ a preferred choice for O-rings, seals, and gaskets used in mission-critical aerospace applications.
