PZH Certificate
National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene (NIZP-PZH)
The PZH, short for the National Institute of Hygiene, has been certifying products since 1955. This institution conducts comprehensive activities in the field of public health. Every certified product undergoes detailed testing for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and quality to prevent the circulation of products that may pose risks to human health or the environment.
What is the PZH Certificate?
The PZH Hygienic Certificate confirms that a given product is safe for human health and the environment. Certification is mandatory for items that come into contact with drinking water. It is issued upon request by the manufacturer and granted by NIZP-PZH – the only authorised body in Poland for quality and safety assessment in this field.
How to Obtain a PZH Certificate?
The certificate is issued by the National Institute of Public Health – National Research Institute in Warsaw. Certified products are marked with the official PZH logo – a blue and white circle with the institute’s name and a tree symbol.
The Certification Process
To obtain a hygienic certificate, the applicant must first select and complete the appropriate application form depending on the type of product:
-
Application for hygienic certificate from the Department of Environmental Health Safety
-
Application for a Health Quality Certificate from the Department of Food Safety
-
Application for hygienic certificate from the Department of Toxicology and Health Risk Assessment
Once completed, the form and documentation must be submitted to NIZP-PZH either in person, by post, or electronically. Upon registration, the applicant is required to pay an administrative fee.
After meeting all formal requirements, the certification process begins. The product is assessed for its impact on environmental and human health. If the review is successful, the original certificate is sent by post or, upon request, electronically.
How Much Does the PZH Certificate Cost?
The cost depends on the type of certification procedure (standard, express, urgent) and the scope of laboratory testing required.
Validity of the PZH Certificate
The PZH certificate is valid depending on the issuing department:
-
Department of Environmental Health Safety – certificates valid for 5 years; for drinking water systems, pools, and bathroom equipment – 3 years.
-
Department of Food Safety – certificates valid for 3 years, though this may vary.
-
Department of Toxicology and Health Risk Assessment – certificates valid for 3 years.
Compliance ensures the product does not pose any risk to human health or the environment.
How to Verify a PZH Certificate?
Manufacturers often display the PZH logo visibly on packaging, labels, brochures, or on their websites to highlight product safety. It can also be confirmed via official documentation from the producer.
Is the PZH Certificate Mandatory?
Previously, it was mandatory for most building materials, HVAC systems, biocides, and children’s products. Since 2016, the certificate is only mandatory for products that come into contact with drinking water. These undergo detailed hygienic assessments as regulated by Article 12.1 of the Polish Water Supply and Wastewater Act.
The regulation aims to minimise secondary water contamination and the harmful effects of chemical substances.
PZH Certificate for Food Contact Materials
Since 2016, only products that come into contact with potable water require mandatory certification. Voluntary certification applies to items that contact food or human skin. Examples include kitchenware, plastics, paper, rubber materials, and baby products.
