What material are gas O-rings made of?

What properties do gas seals have?
Gas is a flammable medium, so certified flat gas seals must meet demanding safety standards. Gas leaks can cause explosions, fires, poisoning, and disruptions in various industries. Seals must be durable and resistant to wear. O-rings, depending on the composition they are made of, exhibit resistance to acids, bases, chemicals, UV radiation, oxygen, water. These properties ensure the durability of gas installations. Seals made of FKM-based elastomers have excellent anti-corrosion properties, significantly extending their lifespan. Gas seals are resistant to stretching and elongation, as well as resistant to deformation under compression. Carbon Monoxide Detector
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless toxic gas. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion (gas, gasoline, wood) resulting from insufficient oxygen. Accumulation of carbon monoxide in a room poses a threat to life and health. Ensuring proper ventilation, regular airing, and checking chimney blockages reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. An effective solution is to have a carbon monoxide sensor. How does a carbon monoxide detector work? A carbon monoxide sensor has a built-in chemical or electrochemical sensor containing substances that react with CO in the air. It has a speaker that emits an audible signal. The carbon monoxide detector will sound an alarm when it detects an elevated level of carbon monoxide in the room. The alarm will turn off when the carbon monoxide level in the room drops to a safe level. Carbon monoxide detectors are available in various types:
- Biomimetic carbon monoxide sensor - uses a gel that changes color after absorbing carbon monoxide, triggering a warning alarm;
- Metal oxide semiconductor sensors - the semiconductor changes its conductive properties upon detecting carbon monoxide, activating the alarm in the carbon monoxide detector;
- Electrochemical carbon monoxide detector - electrochemical cells emit a warning sound from the natural gas sensor after detecting increased levels of CO;
Why must LPG O-rings be certified?

They are responsible for the system's tightness where high pressures and flammable gases are present. The use of non-certified technical seals significantly increases the risk of leaks, leaks, and life-threatening situations. Proper selection of gas seals is a duty resulting from safety standards such as:
- EN 549 standard - specifies requirements for rubber materials for seals and membranes used in gas appliances and gas installation accessories;
- EN 682 standard - provides guidelines for the proper selection of rubber seals in supply pipes and fittings, auxiliary devices, and valves intended for the transportation of gas and hydrocarbon liquids;
It should be noted that only certified LPG O-rings meet safety standards and guarantee resistance to gas, high pressures, and temperatures. In practice, standard NBR O-rings are often used, which lack the required gas certifications. This is mainly due to their low price, easy availability, and relatively good resistance to gas and oils. Although these round-cross-section sealing rings offer a lifespan of 5-10 years, they are not tested for long-term contact with LPG mixtures under high-pressure conditions and resistance to high temperatures. Standard NBR O-rings for gas may be more susceptible to aging, oxidation, and permanent deformation, leading to deterioration of the seal, loss of tightness, and leakage risks over time.
When choosing a seal, one should not rely solely on price - durability, tightness, and resistance are a priority for every LPG installation.
Critical to the safety of any gas installation is the awareness that certified products are not just a formality - they confirm the durability, chemical resistance, mechanical stability over long periods of operation, adequate gas permeability, long service life, and reliable tightness.
Factors affecting the long-term operation of gas seals also include regular seal maintenance, technical condition inspection, and replacement of worn-out seals.
