DIN 53507 – Tear Resistance of Elastomers

24.06.2023

DIN 53507 defines the test method for evaluating the tear resistance of elastomer materials. This property is crucial in industrial applications where rubber must resist tearing. Tear resistance refers to how fast a rubber material fails after an initial crack. Factors like specimen shape, pull speed, and testing temperature influence the outcome.

DIN 53507

Testing Methods According to DIN 53507 and Current DIN ISO 34-1

Historically, two tests were used: the strip test (DIN 53507) and the Graves angle test (DIN 53515). Both standards have been replaced by DIN ISO 34-1, which describes:

  • strip test,

  • angle test with notch,

  • angle test without notch.

Results are provided in N/mm. These tests help assess the mechanical durability of rubber components under tearing forces.
