Thread Sealant: Anaerobic Adhesives
Thread lockers are adhesives intended to seal thread-bolt connections. Maximizing the level of sealing and security is fundamental in such connections. Let's check what is worth knowing about anaerobic adhesives.
Thread Sealants - Types
Among the anaerobic adhesives available on the market, we most often distinguish the following types of thread sealants:
- green adhesive
- blue adhesive
- red adhesive
Depending on the possibility of disassembly, we distinguish types of anaerobic adhesives:
- adhesives for threads that are difficult to disassemble
- adhesives for threads that are moderately difficult to disassemble
- adhesives for disassemblable threads
Let's take a closer look at the individual types of the available assortment.
Purple Thread Locker B 222
Thread locker B 222 is an easily removable adhesive. The advantage of this adhesive is sealing the screwed connection with the possibility of not damaging it. It is a sealant used up to +150°C in places that we know will be unscrewed.
Brown Thread Locker B 542
Brown thread locker is adhesive B 542. It is classified as a medium-strength removable adhesive, intended for use at temperatures up to +150°C. The use of brown adhesive begins before tightening, and its effect is: preventing leaks. It also prevents the loosening of threaded connections.
Green Thread Locker B 270 and B 290
Among green adhesives, we can distinguish two models. They mainly differ in their mode of action and the temperature for which they are intended.
Anaerobic Adhesive B 270 for Studs
Green anaerobic adhesive B 270 is used up to 180 degrees Celsius. Its purpose is to seal the connection by applying it to the studs, i.e., before screwing in the bolts. It is worth mentioning that it is a strong adhesive classified as difficult to disassemble.
Wicking Grade Anaerobic Adhesive B 290
Green thread locker B 290, compared to B 270, is an adhesive intended for use at temperatures up to +150 degrees Celsius. The main difference in the application of these adhesives lies in their application. Adhesive 290 is a wicking grade thread locker - meaning it penetrates the connection after it has been tightened. B 290 is also classified as a difficult-to-disassemble anaerobic adhesive.
Where do we use green thread sealants?
Adhesives B 270 and B 290 are strong, i.e., difficult-to-disassemble adhesives.
Adhesive B 270 is used before tightening up to +180°C, while Adhesive B 290 is used after tightening up to +150°C.
Blue Thread Locker B 243
Thread locker B 243 is a blue adhesive. This thread sealant is medium-strength removable, meaning the threads can be unscrewed. It is used before tightening at temperatures up to +180°C.
Red Thread Locker B 262 and B 271
Red anaerobic adhesive is the strongest adhesive. We have two models: B 262 and B 271.
Anaerobic Adhesive B 262
Red anaerobic adhesive, difficult to disassemble. The strongest of the available anaerobic adhesives used in connections up to a temperature of +150°C.
Anaerobic Adhesive B 271
Adhesive B 271 is a red thread locker used at temperatures up to +180°C. It is a higher model of adhesive B 262. It also offers the strongest threaded connection. Red thread lockers are the strongest adhesive available on the market. Any attempts to unscrew them result in stripped threads. So let's answer the question:
Which to choose: red or blue thread locker?
If we plan to unscrew the assembled elements in the future, it is worth choosing a blue thread locker. However, if we know that there will be no need to unscrew such a connection, it is worth using a red sealant.

Which thread locker to choose?
Adhesives for professional threaded and screw connections
Which thread locker to choose? - this is a frequent question our customers ask. It all depends on our needs and purpose. As we described above, metal-to-metal bonding substances with threads have varying bonding strengths and temperature ranges, which is why we answer the questions:
High-temperature thread locker?
If we need a high-temperature anaerobic adhesive, we distinguish models depending on the temperature height:
- anaerobic adhesives up to +150°C
- anaerobic adhesives up to +180°C
High-temperature adhesives also come in color variants:
- purple
- brown
- green
- blue
- red
What adhesive for stripped threads?
If we already have elements where the thread is stripped, or rather partially stripped, then it is worth using a red thread locker, such as B 270. However, if the thread is completely stripped, then the following steps should be taken:
- clean both elements
- re-thread both elements
- use compressed air to clean off shavings
- use the appropriate thread locker for the application -tighten the connections
Hydraulic thread locker - Applications
Hydraulic thread locker is one of the many possible applications of anaerobic adhesives. See a dedicated product that facilitates the connection of hydraulic systems with threaded connections.
How to use thread locker?
Guide on how to use adhesives for threaded connections:
- Using a degreaser, clean the surfaces to be joined
- Wipe dry with a clean cloth
- Apply anaerobic adhesive to the internal or external thread
- Screw in the bolt or part equipped with a bolt
- Wipe off excess with paper or a cloth to clean the surface
