Rubber Seals - Properties

Introduction to Rubber Seal Properties

As we already know, rubber seals come in many types. In addition to the physical classification of seals, they can be divided according to the rubber mixture used or the type of rubber, which influences the properties of the rubber seals.

Silicone Seals

Silicone seals are seals dedicated to contact with food products, which is why silicone rubber is often referred to as food-grade rubber. Depending on their properties, the silicone mixture has a high-temperature resistance of up to 260 degrees Celsius, and high-temperature silicone seals can withstand up to 300 degrees Celsius.

Fiber Seals

Seals made from technical fiber, such as compressed cellulose or cotton paper saturated with zinc chloride (ZnCl2), allow for wide usage. Fiber seals can be used in water, oil, and even technical gas connections. They were first used in hydraulics and machinery produced in the 1980s and 1990s. It is also worth mentioning the method of cutting fiber seals. This is a punching process, a simple and accurate way that allows for efficient cutting and quick availability.

Foam Seals

Any seals made from micro-rubber are foam seals. They are used to fill spaces and reduce shocks and vibrations or as a spacer to prevent the movement of individual elements. The most common foam seals are EPDM window seals. They are also used as self-adhesive seals resistant to UV radiation and water contact. Another variant is neoprene seals, made from a foam mixture that is resistant to aging and oil and grease resistance.

Viton® Seals

Viton seals, made from FKM and/or FPM rubber mixtures, are Viton® seals (remember that the name is a registered trademark of DuPont). These seals are known for their high resistance to oils and greases. They are used for contact with mineral oils, synthetic oils, fuels, and even petroleum. They can withstand temperatures up to 210 degrees Celsius and high pressures of up to 10,000 psi, or 690 bar and almost 680 atmospheres.
